| Tier | Input / 1M | Output / 1M | Cached in / 1M |
|---|---|---|---|
Sol Hardest problems: complex coding, security research | $5.00 | $30.00 | $0.5000 |
Terra (this page) High-volume business tasks | $2.50 | $15.00 | $0.2500 |
Luna Fast everyday work | $1.00 | $6.00 | $0.1000 |
Terra is the mid tier - half the price of Sol. GPT-5.6 launched in limited preview on 26 June 2026 (~20 organisations).
GPT-5.6 Terra is the middle tier of OpenAI's three-model GPT-5.6 family, released 26 June 2026. It targets high-volume business workloads – customer support, internal tools, and document analysis – at $2.50 per 1M input tokens and $15 per 1M output tokens, half the Sol rate.
For most production traffic that does not need Sol-level reasoning, Terra is the natural default: it shares the same ~1.5M-token context window and the same improved prompt caching (cache reads at the 90% discount, so $0.25 / 1M cached; cache writes at 1.25x uncached input, with explicit breakpoints and a 30-minute minimum cache life).
Route the hardest requests up to Sol and the cheapest, latency-tolerant work down to Luna; Terra covers the broad middle where cost and capability both matter. As of launch the models are limited to a small preview cohort.

Frequently asked
- How much does GPT-5.6 Terra cost per 1M tokens?
- $2.50 for input and $15 for output per 1M tokens. Cached input reads bill at $0.25 / 1M (a 90% discount).
- When should I use Terra instead of Sol or Luna?
- Terra is tuned for high-volume business tasks like support, internal tools, and document analysis. Use Sol ($5/$30) for the hardest coding and security work, and Luna ($1/$6) for fast everyday tasks.
- What is the GPT-5.6 Terra context window?
- Reported at approximately 1.5M tokens, the same as the rest of the GPT-5.6 family. OpenAI has not published an official figure at launch.
- How does prompt caching work on GPT-5.6 Terra?
- Cache reads get the standard 90% discount ($0.25 / 1M input); cache writes bill at 1.25x the uncached input rate, with explicit cache breakpoints and a 30-minute minimum cache life.
- Is GPT-5.6 Terra generally available?
- Not at launch. It debuted 26 June 2026 for a limited preview cohort of roughly 20 organisations, with wider availability expected in the following weeks.
